Flip A Strip

The Flip a Strip competition, sponsored by the Scottsdale Museum of Art, focuses on one of America’s least loved suburban building types: the Strip Mall. The proposal offers a new kind of typology for the strip, building around existing retail tenants. Cars are collected and stored vertically in automated parking towers, freeing up valuable real estate. This allows rectangular building volumes, echoing the simple forms of the existing strip buildings, to be stacked in new configurations to accommodate new uses, bringing more daytime and nighttime users to the project and ensuring the viability of the service-oriented strip retail tenants.
